The Golden Globe and SAG Awards nominations are not always a clear indicator of what could be an Oscar frontrunner, but for the past couple of years, the films that went on to be the top contenders 2017’s Moonlight and La La Land; 2018’s Three Billboards and The Shape of Water were at the front of the pack in combined nominations. The new crop of nominees the Globes-granting Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced Dec. 6; SAG-AFTRA followed on Dec. 12 was led by the musical remake A Star Is Born with nine nominations, followed by The Favourite and Vice with eight each the latter of which had a surprisingly strong Globes showing with six. Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman also cleaned up in the major categories, including a pair of best actor noms for John David Washington.

However, a few awards hopefuls, like Steve McQueen’s Widows and the Julia Roberts starrer Ben Is Back, came up empty, while others, including Damien Chazelle’s First Man, underperformed and will have some major catching up to do to keep hope alive for Oscar nominations in the major categories.

Most noticeably underrepresented in the TV nominations was FX’s critically acclaimed Atlanta. The second season was snubbed in the Globes’ comedy series category though Donald Glover made the actor shortlist and missed out on individual actor nominations from SAG-AFTRA but did earn a series nod.

Emmy darlings like Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, HBO’s Barry and FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story topped the TV race, with the addition of one newcomer: Netflix’s The Kominsky Method, which is buoyed by two veteran actors Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin.

And for its swan song season, FX’s The Americans earned its first Globe and SAG Awards series noms, going out on a high note.
